Semantic and Digital Media Technologies

The growth, distribution of and access to multimedia material, i.e. recorded images, audio, video or 3D/4D recorded material as well as computer generated 2D, 3D and 4D content, is so huge that these resources now constitute the major share of internet traffic as well as a huge share of data stored on any kind of electronic devices. With their success, the multimedia contents become ever harder to manage, to find and to access by the private users and the public or commercial organizations that created them. The conference series SAMT, the international conference on semantic and digital media technologies, has been installed in 2006 in order to tackle this problem by recurring to the semantics and pragmatics of multimedia generation, management and access. Student of the month - August

Nikolaos Simou
Nikolaos Simou is a research and teaching assistant at the Image, Video and Multimedia Systems Lab of National Technical University of Athens. He is working towards his PhD degree under the supervision of Prof Stefanos Kollias and Dr George Stamou. Currently his main research interests include knowledge representation both under certain and uncertain or imprecise knowledge based on crisp and fuzzy descriptions logics, ontologies, implementation and optimization of reasoning systems and applications for the Semantic Web. He has also designed and implemented the innovative fuzzy reasoning engine FiRE based on the fuzzy description logic f-SHIN which is used for many Semantic Web applications. In K-Space he is mainly involved in WP4 and more specifically WP 4.2 (Knowledge-assisted Multimedia Analysis) and WP 4.3 (Multimedia Reasoning and Annotation). He was also involved in a collaboration with UEP and DFKI for building an architecture for mining resources complementary to audio-visual streams. His work related to K-Space has been published at the following conferences: SAMT 2007, ISWC 2007, SMAP 2007
