Semantic and Digital Media Technologies

The growth, distribution of and access to multimedia material, i.e. recorded images, audio, video or 3D/4D recorded material as well as computer generated 2D, 3D and 4D content, is so huge that these resources now constitute the major share of internet traffic as well as a huge share of data stored on any kind of electronic devices. With their success, the multimedia contents become ever harder to manage, to find and to access by the private users and the public or commercial organizations that created them. The conference series SAMT, the international conference on semantic and digital media technologies, has been installed in 2006 in order to tackle this problem by recurring to the semantics and pragmatics of multimedia generation, management and access. Student of the month - December

Jean-Louis Durrieu
Jean-Louis Durrieu is a PhD candidate in the "Signal and Image Processing" (TSI) department at Telecom ParisTech (formerly ENST - GET), under the supervision of Prof. Gael Richard and Associate Prof. Bertrand David. His research interests are mainly aimed at signal processing applied to music information retrieval (MIR), that is to say for music content analysis and music indexing. More specifically, he is studying on the application of audio source separation methods, with statistical signal modelling, in order to transcribe (and extract/separate) the main melody from polyphonic music signals. Within K-Space, he has been working together with Jan Weil from Technische Universitat Berlin (TUB) on Musical Lead-Sheet generation, using the former's work on main melody transcription and the latter's work on chord transcription to generate a musical transcription where both the lead melodic line as well as the chord sequence appear.
